Preferences of the Gaps —
By Jay Weitzner, MS, CMSS, CMES
“Preferences of the Gaps is a concept to describe the tendency in the exercise, fitness, health, and wellness fields for people to fill gaps in scientific knowledge with personal preferences, familiar practices, or comforting beliefs. Instead of acknowledging uncertainty or seeking data, professionals and clients alike unconsciously patch the “unknowns” with what they like, what they’ve always been told, or what feels right. As a result, myths and biases often stand in for evidence-based reasoning, creating the illusion of certainty while the true explanation remains unaddressed.
Preferences of the Gaps create illusions of certainty — but they don’t solve problems. Empirical rationalism does.”
Those preferences have no place here at Symmetry Exercise Clinic.
