How Do We Help People Move Better and Feel Better?
People often ask me a simple question:
“How do you help people?”
It sounds like it should have a simple answer.
But the problem is that the exact literal answer can sound too simple.
It can sound underwhelming.
It can even sound unrealistic.
And because of that, people can easily miss the value of what we actually do at Symmetry Exercise Clinic.
So let me give you an analogy.
The Knot Analogy
Imagine you have a string tied in a knot.
You hand it to me, and I undo the knot almost instantly.
You might say:
“Wow, how did you do that so fast?”
And I could answer:
“I just pushed this part of the string through here, pulled that part through there, and moved the strings in the right places.”
Technically, that is true.
But it is not a very satisfying answer.
Because the impressive part is not that I moved the string.
Everyone can move string.
The impressive part is knowing which part to move, which direction to move it, how much to move it, and when to stop.
That is the difference.
It is not the technique by itself.
It is the thought process behind the technique.
And that is very similar to what we do at Symmetry Exercise Clinic.
Why “Exercise” Is Not a Complete Answer
If you asked me literally:
“What do you do to help people with pain and mobility issues?”
I could say:
“We use a form of exercise.”
But that answer creates a problem immediately.
Because people hear the word exercise and think of a gym.
They think of workouts.
They think of stretching, strengthening, sweating, pushing harder, or doing random exercises for a painful body part.
And that is not really what I mean.
Yes, technically, it is exercise.
But in the same way that undoing a knot is technically just moving string, helping someone move better is not just about “doing exercises.”
The value is not that exercise happened.
The value is knowing exactly how exercise should be used for that individual person.
What We Are Really Doing
At the most basic level, we are using force.
Force is simply a push or a pull.
So if you asked me what I do in the most literal way, I could say:
“I put force into a person’s body, and their body responds to that force.”
Or even simpler:
“I push, and they push back.”
That is the literal answer.
But let’s be honest — that answer sounds completely underwhelming.
Who is going to hear that and think:
“Great. Instead of seeing a surgeon, chiropractor, massage therapist, acupuncturist, or taking an anti-inflammatory, I’m going to go see someone who pushes on me while I push back.”
That sounds ridiculous.
Unless you understand the thought process behind it.
The Skill Is Knowing What To Do Next
The value is not just that force is applied.
The value is knowing:
Where to apply force
How much force to use
What position the person should be in
What their body is capable of tolerating that day
Whether they should be moving or staying still
How long to apply the force
How often to repeat it
What to do next based on how their system responds
That is where the skill is.
That is where the methodology matters.
That is why two people can appear to be doing something similar from the outside, but the outcome can be completely different.
The Simple Answer and the Real Answer
So when someone asks:
“How do you help people?”
The simplest answer is:
“I push on people, and they push back.”
But the real answer is:
“At Symmetry Exercise Clinic, we use a specific exercise-based methodology to determine the exact conditions under which a person’s system needs force. Then we adjust those conditions over time so the person can move better, feel better, reduce or eliminate pain, and use their body the way they want.”
That is what helps people move better.
That is what helps people feel better.
That is what helps people tolerate more of life again.
Just like undoing a knot, the action may look simple from the outside.
But the difference is knowing exactly which move to make next.
